British Columbia

British Columbia is renowned for its natural beauty and diverse landscapes. With its mountains and hiking trails, outdoor activities abound for nature enthusiasts. This province has it all, whether you enjoy hiking, skiing, exploring national parks, immersing yourself in art scenes, or simply admiring the great outdoors.

These appealing attributes may be reasons to consider moving to British Columbia. However, alongside the cost of living, safety is also a top priority. Safety levels can vary across regions, with some areas boasting lower crime rates than others, and certain places being less vulnerable to forest fires.

To help you compare, read on to discover the top 5 safest places to live in British Columbia with the best quality of life this year.

Methodology

Our methodology for ranking the safest places to live in BC prioritizes safety, using the most recent Crime Severity Index (CSI) data provided by Statistics Canada. The CSI measures the severity of crimes reported to law enforcement, considering both their frequency and gravity. A baseline of 100 was set in 2006, with scores interpreted as follows:

  • Below 70: Low crime severity
  • 70 to 99: Moderate crime severity
  • 100 to 139: High crime severity
  • 140 and above: Very high crime severity

Additionally, areas in British Columbia with lower wildfire risks are prioritized, especially cities actively working to reduce fire hazards. Although some regions may have higher CSI scores, they’re considered safe due to proactive forest fire prevention efforts, as our safety assessment includes more than just crime statistics.

While safety is our primary focus, we also consider the overall quality of life. The “Best Quality of Life” aspect is evaluated based on real feedback from individuals who have moved to the area, as well as insights from trusted online forums. We particularly look for positive feedback on job opportunities, quality of education, housing affordability (when possible), healthcare services, sense of safety, public transportation, environmental cleanliness, and the availability of recreational facilities and parks.
