How to notify the Tennessee TDOSHS of an address change?

How to change your address for your Tennessee DMV?

When looking to change your address for your Alaska DMV, you have three options to pick from:

Keep reading to learn more with our step-by-step guide.

Are you planning to move to or within Tennessee? Or perhaps leaving the country-music rich state? If you have a driver’s license and a car, you must notify the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) of the address change.

Unlike other states where you have a dedicated Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the responsibility of driver services in Tennessee falls under the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security and Tennessee Department of Safety for vehicle registrations.

TDOSHS is a state agency that deals with public safety, driver services, and everything in between. Do you want a new REAL ID? You contact TDOSHS. Want to change your address and other credentials? You get in touch with TDOSHS. Coming back to the address change, you only get 10 days to notify TN of the address change. So, before you hop onto the driver’s seat and cruise around the new neighborhood, you must get all the paperwork sorted out.

Why is it so important? You will miss all the renewal notices, parking tickets, unpaid registration fees reminders, and everything else associated with your driver’s license and vehicle registration.

So, if you are physically relocating, changing your address with the United States Postal Service, or your local 9-1-1 Emergency Communications District, you need to notify TDOSHS too.

I’m moving within Tennessee: How to change my address with the Tennessee TDOSHS?

If you are already living in Tennessee but planning to shift to another city or around the block, TDOSHS is still going to knock on your door after 10 days. The address change policy goes for both your driver’s license and vehicle registrations.

Below are your options on how to update your address with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security if you are moving within the state.

Moreover, if you are moving within Tennessee, the state does not require the address to be changed on your actual license. In simple words, you don’t have to get an entirely new driver’s license that reflects your new address. If the state has your new address on its files, you are good to go.

Note: Notifying the United States Postal Service of the address change will not change your address with the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

1. Online

Why bother going to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security service station when you can update the address on the comfort of your coach? The e-Services portal makes it extremely convenient for you to update your address if you are moving within Tennessee.

But there’s a catch; not everyone is eligible for an online address change. You must have an unexpired, valid Tennessee driver’s license or State ID.

Step by step process

  1. Visit the TN Department of Safety & Homeland Security’s Driver Services Division website.
  2. Click Driver Services.
  3. Once you’re in the Driver Services Division, log in to the e-Services portal. You’ll need to type your last name, DOB, TN License/ID Number, and SSN. Check the box at the end if you don’t have an SSN.DMV Change of Address, Tennessee, United States
  4. After that, you’ll see the list of available services; select “Change Your Address.”
  5. You’ll be prompted to present some information regarding the address change.
  6. That’s it; your address will be updated in the state’s files.
  7. If you want a new driver’s license with your updated address on it, go back to the list of available services and click on renew your license or order a duplicate license if you are not within your renewal period.
  8. You have to pay $8 if it’s the first duplicate and $12 for the 2nd or subsequent duplicate. You can visit Driver License Fees to check the updated costs.
  9. Once the transaction and processing are complete, you’ll receive the new driver’s license at your mailing address within 15-20 days.
  10. If TDOSHS does not have digital versions of your signature and photo on file, you must request a duplicate card in person.
  11. For vehicle registration, you need to visit the Tennessee County Clerk’swebsite and check if your county is eligible for the online address change or not.DMV Change of Address, Tennessee, United States

Documents/Information required

  • TN driver’s license or ID number
  • Mailing address
  • Last 4 digits of your Social Security number (SSN)
  • Payment for driver’s license replacement

The vehicle registrations are managed by the Tennessee Department of Revenue and Tennessee County Clerk. You can only update your address online if your state allows it. Otherwise, you’ll have to visit your local county clerk’s office.

2. In person

If you are not eligible for the online address change or just don’t want to get into the hassles of technology, just visit your nearest Self-Service Kiosk or a TDOSHS service center.

Here are some of the major self-service kiosks and TDOSHS service center locations:

Anderson County Clerk Kiosk

3310 Andersonville Highway Ste B

Davidson County Clerk

TDOSHS Service Center

700 Second Avenue South #101

Oak Ridge Driver Services Center

  1. Find your nearest self-service kiosk, follow the kiosk’s on-screen prompts, and change your address in just a couple of minutes. You can visit Driver License Fees to check the updated costs.
  2. Visit your local TDOSHS service center and fill the change of address form. If you want a duplicate driver’s license, just pay the subsequent fee, and you’ll receive your shiny new license in 15-20 days.
  3. For vehicle registration, visit your local county clerk’s office, fill the address change form, and that’s it.

Documents/Information required

  • TN driver’s license or ID number
  • Mailing address
  • Last 4 digits of your Social Security number (SSN)
  • Payment for driver’s license replacement
  • There might be some specific requirements for your county for the vehicle registration change of address
  • Vehicle identification number

3. By mail

You need to mail the following to change your address on your driver’s license:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Driver License Number
  • Social Security Number
  • Old address that appears on current driver license
  • New address
  • County of your new address

Another option is to pick up a change of address form from your closest driver service center and mail it to the address below:

TN DEPT OF SAFETY AND HOMELAND SECURITY

ATTN: RECORDS 1150 Foster Avenue Nashville, TN 37243. You can get the address change form from any TDOSHS service center.

It take approximately 15 business days for your record with the Department of Safety to be updated. If you want your actual license to reflect the change, you need to submit a request for a duplicate vehicle registration. It can be mailed to your local county clerk and must include:

  • License plate number,
  • Vehicle identification number
  • $3 fee (plus an additional $0.50 if the request requires certification)
  • Mailing fees may apply; please contact your county for more information

I’m moving from another State to Tennessee: How to change my address with the Tennessee TDOSHS?

If you are moving from another state to Tennessee, you must update your address within 30 days of your move. There’s no way you can apply for this online. You need to visit Tennessee Driver Services Center in person.

Update my address in person with the TDOSHS

If you were a former Tennessee resident, the process would be much easier, but you still have to visit the service center in person. If you are a new resident, you need to transfer your out-of-state license to Tennessee. Make sure you don’t have outstanding suspensions, revocations, or cancellations on the out-of-state driver’s license.

Note: You must visit a full-service driver service center to obtain a new Tennessee driver’s license.

Step by step process

  • Schedule a driver’s license appointment.
  • Locate your nearest TDOSHS full-service center here.
  • You will have to submit the following document:

    • Current license or certified copy of driving record or other acceptable ID
    • If you are submitting a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR), it must be original and issued no more than 30 days prior to your Tennessee application date.
    • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal presence.
    • Proof of Tennessee residency with your name and resident address.
    • Proof of Social Security Number.
    • Pay $28.00 for D-Operator, Non-Commercial License. For others, visit TN Driver License Fees.
  • Whether you are a new or returning resident, TN wants you to surrender the out-of-state license at the time of application for a Tennessee license.
  • If you are applying for a Class-D passenger vehicle, you are just required to take a Tennessee vision screening at the full-service driver service center. Commercial driver license holders must fulfill additional testing requirements
  • If your out-of-state license has expired for more than six months, you need to pass a knowledge exam, road skills test, and vision screening.
  • For vehicle registration, you can obtain a vehicle title from the local county clerk’s office after emissions testing (if the county requires it). You need the following documents for obtaining a new Tennessee vehicle registration:

    • Proof of identification and proof of residency
    • Passed emissions certificate (Hamilton, Davidson, Rutherford, Sumner, Williamson, or Wilson County. Visit Tennessee’s vehicle inspection program website to learn more)
    • Most current out-of-state registration
    • Either the name and address of the lienholder to whom you are making payments OR, in the event of no lienholder, your out-of-state title.
    • You must pay $21.50 for personal vehicle registration. Visit the fee section for vehicle registration for more details.

For more details, visit Titling a Vehicle (New Residents or Those Relocating to Tennessee).
