I’m moving within Louisiana: How to change my address with the Louisiana OMV?
Louisiana offers countless opportunities in terms of jobs and business. Chances are that you will move around cities or neighborhoods a couple of times in your lifetime.
If you drive a car, you must inform the OMV within 10 days of your move. With all the chaos of moving to a new place, don’t miss your visit to one of the OMV offices.
You can change your address with the OMV in the following ways:
- In person
That’s right, Louisiana OMV does not offer online services for an address change. However, you do get the following services through expresslane:
- Driver’s license renewal
- ID card renewal
- Duplicate ID/license
- Vehicle registration renewal
- Duplicate vehicle registration
- Number plate cancellation
Note: If your mailing address is different from what appears on the face of your license, you are not eligible to request a duplicate or a renewal online. You must visit your local Office of Motor Vehicles for the issuance of a new driver’s license.
And be aware that your driver’s license will not reflect the new mailing address even if you filled out an official U.S. Postal Service Change of Address Form. The same goes for vehicle registration.
With that out of the way, let’s see how you can update your address in person with the OMV.
In person
Online services would have been much more convenient, but what’s better than going out to the OMV in person—no rocket science, no online logins, no nothing.

Step by Step Process

- You’ll see a number of services listed there. Scroll down and click on Commercial Drivers License -Renewal and Additional Endorsements.
- Select your preferred date and time.
- And finally, you’ll be prompted to enter your information. You need your driver’s license number, VIN number, and contact number.
- Once you have booked an appointment, the process is simple.
- Just visit the OMV on the specified date with the relevant documents, fill the address change form (for both driver’s license and vehicle registration), and pay the relevant fee.
- You will not be allowed to just change your address if your license is expiring in the next 90 days. You have to renew it in person by visiting an OMV office.
Changing your address on your driver’s license alone will NOT update the mailing address on the vehicle registration.

I’m moving from another State to Louisiana: How to change my address with the Louisiana OMV?
Louisiana, a “melting pot” of cultures, has the fifth-lowest housing prices in the US. Many people move to Louisiana for affordable living and enjoy the vibrant cities’ charms. If you are one of these, you must obtain a LA driver’s license and vehicle registration to cruise around the neighborhood freely.
You only have 30 days to transfer your out-of-state driver’s license to Louisiana OMV. Online services are not available; you’ll have to visit an OMV office in person.
Update my address in person with the OMV
Prerequisites? You need to have your out-of-state driver’s license or an official driving record to start with. You should not have any outstanding suspensions or revocations on the out-of-state driver’s license.
If your out-of-state driver’s license is expired or suspended, you will be required to pass the driving and written test.
If you were a former Louisiana resident and were temporarily out of state, you will only be eligible for a driver’s renewal if:
- You are a full-time student attending classes out of state/country (copy of current student ID required)
- You are military or military dependent (copy of current military ID and copy of enlistment papers or letter from commanding officer required)
