I’m moving within Texas: How to change my address with the Texas DMV?
Are you moving from one neighborhood to another within Texas? You still need to update your address with the Texas DMV. Filling out an official U.S. Postal Service Change of Address Form will not update your address with the TxDMV.
But you don’t have to worry as it’s quite easy to update your address. You can even do it in the comfort of your couch. You have the following options:
Note: You have to update your address on both your driver’s license and vehicle registration. You must update your address on all your vehicle registrations.
You don’t have to apply for an entirely new driver’s license. You’ll just receive an updated one having your latest address on it. And don’t worry, you are not required to go through the driving test again for this.
1. Online
You’re in luck as the Texas DMV allows you to apply for address change online. No visits to the local DMV office or whatsoever, log into your account, fill the online change of address form, and you’re done.
Here’s the eligibility criteria for online address change:
- Your driver’s license is not expired.
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You have a proper driver’s license, not a provisional or learner license.
- You are a U.S. citizen.
- Your driver’s license is a Class C or CM
- A valid credit card.
- Your Social Security Number is on file with DPS.

Step-by-Step process
- Visit Texas Driver License Renewal, Replacement, Change of Address or Change of Emergency Contacts system by clicking here.
- Enter your driver’s license or I.D. number, DOB, audit/D.D. number and last four digits of your Social Security Number. You will find your driver’s license/I.D. number and audit/D.D. number here:

- Print the temporary driver’s license or I.D. (valid for 60 days), and you’re good to go.
- Follow the same procedure for vehicle registration change of address. You’ll need the license plate number and last four digits of your Vehicle Identification Number.

2. In person

3. By mail
No rocket science here. Just download and fill the Application for Change of Address (DL-64), pay a $10 fee (check or money order), and mail it to:

I’m moving from another State to Texas: How to change my address with the Texas DMV?
If you are moving from another state to Texas, you need to get a new driver’s license from TxDMV. You have 90 days to apply for a new driver’s license and 30 to register your vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, considering you have a valid, unexpired driver’s license from another U.S. state.
Sorry to break it to you but you will have to visit the Texas Department of Public Safety in person to apply for a new driver’s license.
Update my address in person with the DMV
You can drive around in Texas for 90 days if you have a valid, unexpired learner license from another U.S. state or U.S. territory or Canada. After that, you need to pay a visit to your local DPS Texas mega center/driver license office.
Step by Step Procedure:
- Locate the nearest Texas Department of Public Safety mega center/driver license office.
- Schedule a driver’s license appointment here. You can also visit the driver’s license office and book an appointment through the self-service kiosk.
- Download and fill the driver’s license or I.D. card application for adults (DL-14A). It will also be available at the driver’s license office.
- Attach the required document with the application.
- Pay the driver’s license fee—$16 for under 18, $33 for 18 to 84, and $9 for 85 and older.
- If you are 18+ years old and hold a valid out-of-state driver’s license, you are exempted from the skills and knowledge exam.
- Provide your thumbprints, have your picture taken, and pass the vision exam.

You don’t need to update TxDMV if you are moving from Texas to another state. Your Texas driver’s license will be canceled as soon as you receive a new one from the state you’re moving to. The same goes for your vehicle registration as well, and you can keep the Texas license plates for yourself.
