How to choose between different types of Internet plans?

Before choosing your Internet plan, it is important to understand the types of Internet connection. Don’t worry, MovingWaldo explains everything to help you make an informed choice.

Types of Internet connections

Fiber

Fiber Internet is ranked #1 for speed. Fiber Internet is normally between 20 and 200 Mbps.

The average price for fiber internet is about $75 to $150 per month. Fiber Internet is ideal for families, online gamers and businesses.

Cable

Cable Internet is ranked #2 for speed. Cable Internet is normally between 20 and 200 Mbps.

The average price for cable internet is about $30 to $100 per month. Cable internet is ideal for Netflix fanatics, families and students.

DSL

DSL Internet is considerably slower than cable. DSL Internet is normally between 5 and 45 Mbps.

The average price for DSL Internet is about $25 to $80 per month. DSL Internet is ideal for completing online assignments, browsing social networks and for minimal Internet use.

Satellite

Satellite Internet is the slowest type of Internet and usually has between 10 and 30 Mbps.

The average price for satellite internet is about $50 to $150 per month. Satellite Internet is not usually used in urban areas. Instead, it is an option for homes in rural areas that cannot access a cable, fiber or DSL connection.

Factors to consider when choosing an Internet provider

In the Canadian telecommunications industry, there are two types of providers regulated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). There are the direct providers, which are the owners of the lines. Among them, we find the big companies like Videotron, Bell and Cogeco.

Then there are the resellers. They use the lines of the direct providers to provide service to their customers. Internet service from a direct or indirect provider is similar.

That said, direct providers often offer more advanced technology, which is mostly reflected in the speed or TV options. If you choose a reseller, you will have a visit from an installer of a proprietary company to connect the service (Bell, Cogeco or Videotron), so keep that in mind!

All the answers to your questions about Internet plans

The best Internet plan is the one that will meet all your needs at the best price! That’s why we at MovingWaldo strive to offer you a comprehensive list of Internet plans available at your address from trusted service providers.

Not all, but a large number of Internet service providers in Canada offer unlimited Internet access. Unlimited Internet allows you to stream and download as much as you want, as well as stay on top of the latest news and information. However, there are times when, due to connection restrictions, sharing of the Internet connection between different devices is limited (to a certain number allowed).

Also, costs associated with an unlimited Internet connection can be very high. So, if your Internet usage does not require such a plan, it is recommended to choose something cheaper that will satisfy your Internet needs.

If you still have a contract with your current Internet provider, canceling your contract can result in some penalties. You may be asked to pay for the remaining months of your contract, or an equipment fee or cancellation fee, also known as a “Contract termination fee”, may also be involved.

That said, if you only have a few months left on your contract, you can keep it and simply move it to your new address until it ends. Otherwise, you can pay an early termination fee to cancel your contract and switch to one of your choice.

To cancel your ISP, the first thing you need to do is learn about the cancellation process by searching their website, or by calling a hotline. Some ISPs offer services on a non-contractual basis, but if you have a contract, you will need to know the actual cost associated with canceling your ISP, such as an early termination fee.

Alternatively, you can seek help from other ISPs that offer a “buy-out” option, which can buy out your current contract. It is also possible to deal with a cancellation service, which will assist you in negotiating cancellation fees and sometimes even cancel your services for you.

First, you will need to look for potential alternative Internet service providers in your area, as it would be pointless to consider Internet providers that do not serve your area. Then, you can evaluate the alternative services based on speed and monthly costs. There are several alternative Internet service providers which can offer a good Internet connection. Internet services using fiber optic technology offer unparalleled speed and prevent the signal strength from decreasing with distance. The additional advantage of fiber optics is the symmetry of speed, which means the download time equals the transfer time of the Internet connection.

The average monthly cost for Internet services in Canada is $53, and the average household spends about $203 per month . A regular plan for Internet service and connection is about $50 per month. To stay within your budget , you can choose to negotiate your monthly Internet bill, decide to reduce the speed of your connection, explore other options by comparing other services and prices, consider TV plans and offers, or purchase your own equipment, such as a modem, router, etc. You can also check out EBOX, Distributel, B2B2C, Transat Telecom, Teksavvy, VMedia and Bravo Telecom for affordable Internet service options.

Work from home: 2.0 Mbps will suffice if you only use email, video conferencing and social networking on one device.

Watching Netflix in the evening: At least 1.5 Mbps and for HD quality, 5.0 Mbps will be needed.

Web browsing and social networking: 5.0 Mbps for web browsing and 10.0 Mbps for social networking.

Online video games: 1 Mbps would be the minimum upload speed, and 3 Mbps for download speed.

A student apartment: 6.0 Mbps and up

A family: 12-25 Mbps depending on the size of the family

Once you have ordered your new Internet service, it is up to you to decide if you want to set up an installation date with professional technicians who will come to your home to install the new Internet system, or you can choose to install it yourself by ordering a self-installation kit.

A self-installation kit should include a modem, router, coaxial and Ethernet cables, and an installation guide. Once you have successfully installed the system, you will need to contact your Internet service provider to activate the service.

Some people may decide to purchase their own modem or router depending on their needs and preferences. The most common reason to buy your own modem is if you plan to use Internet services long term. In this case, simply renting a modem would be more expensive. On the other hand, buying your own modem offers the advantage of having more customization options in the future. This is one of the potential reasons to buy your own router. Many people prefer to buy their own modem to have complete control over the network and avoid connection slowdowns from Internet service providers.

Whether you’re leaving your ISP’s network or not, moving to a new home is definitely an opportunity for you to explore new options. It’s always a good idea to research Internet service providers that service your new address. They may offer a higher quality Internet connection at much better prices. It is important to know your Internet needs first and then make the right decision. You will need to consider the speed, availability, upfront and monthly costs, service offerings and reliability of your new Internet service provider.
