First things first, do not panic!

Take a deep breath. It may seem like a lot, and you may feel pretty tiny in the wake of your overflowing closet, but fear not, just because it seems impossible does not mean it is. The key is to take it to step by step.

Make a checklist

A checklist is one of the most underrated tools. It will help you make things run as smoothly as possible. A checklist will help set a timeline to help you prioritize different packing goals. It will help you determine when tasks need to be completed, as well as where things will be going.

A checklist will also serve as a reminder in case you forget something. It will not only keep you on track but help you stay motivated, ticking that box can make you feel accomplished! Mainly, a checklist will keep you on track and focused, which is very important if you are moving in a hurry.

Below, we have compiled a three day checklist that you can use as a guide to help with your move.

Day 1

  • Box up the basement, garage, and attic first.
  • Move to the linen closet and the laundry room
  • Pack up the rooms that are little used, such as the guest rooms.
  • Pack rarely used items, for example, sports gear, etc.

Day 2

  • Pack decorative items.
  • Pack most of yours and your family members clothing. Except for the items you will be using for the next couple of days
  • Clean and empty all the appliances you intend to bring to your new home. Disassemble and pack furniture pieces you won’t need until moving day.

Day 3

  • Pack the kitchen and the bedrooms – leave out the items you will need for the last night in your old home.
  • Unhook and pack all electronic devices
  • Pack curtains rugs, and anything else that can be kept until the last minute.
  • Make sure that you have packed all your essential documents. Make sure that these items are always easily accessible.

The morning of, pack your toiletries, medicine, kitchen essentials, bedding, and bed.

Be organized

Before you start cramming all of your belongings into boxes, make piles to reduce the number of items you have to pack. By creating piles you will be able to visualize what you are bringing with you and what you are not.

Go through every object in your home and assess its practical and sentimental value. Decide if the object will be of use in your new surroundings or not. Sometimes sentimental value gets in the way, so having a friend, or a family member helping you can be a good idea. They can help make those tough decisions, like “should you keep that broken vase from grade eight?”.

Based upon your assessment, separate your belonging into three different piles –  “Take,” “Give Away,” and “Throw Away.” Unfortunately, there will be no “Sell” pile, since you will be pressed for time, and more likely than not you won’t have enough time to organize a garage sale or post your things to Craigslist or Kijiji. Overall, this step is significant for minimizing the amount of stuff you will be bringing to your new home.

Packing tip: Once and a while an item will pop up, and you have no idea if you should toss it or keep it. Make a “Maybe” pile. This pile will allow you to keep packing, saving you valuable minutes of packing!

Packing tip: the piles you are organizing your items into do not have to be tidy; they have to be clearly defined. Defining the piles is essential; it allows you to get a sense of what is coming  to your new home and what is not.

Take the items from the “Give away” pile and, if time allows, bring them to a recycling center and/or  ask your friends and relatives to come over to choose anything they would like. You can also arrange for a local charity to come to pick up the rest of your items.

Be ruthless, donate or throw away

Sorry, broken grade eight vase, you will not be cutting it.

With your moving deadline fast approaching you have to be decisive about what stays and what goes. When picking up items, ask yourself, will I ever use this again? If the item is still in good condition, find a place to donate it, otherwise throw it away. But, remember stuff can be recycled too!

We recommend that the items that you are throwing away or recycling to put them in a bag once you are done with organizing them. This way you will not be tempted to go back and take something back.

Use proper packing material

The last thing you want when you are tight on time is to be worrying about packing materials. Different options are available to help you find the right materials for you to pack up your home. These options will save you time and bring all the necessary materials to your doorstep. These options will save you time and energy.

Packing tip: designate an area to pack. Gather all your packing supplies in one area to avoid running around and looking for supplies. This will help you avoid wasting precious time while packing.

Packing tip: Don’t make your boxes too heavy. If you can’t pick up the box with ease, then you should consider moving its contents to other boxes.

Packing tip: Don’t forget to seal the bottom of your boxes! Save yourself the frustration of having your entire spice collection strewn all over the sidewalk.

Make packing simple

Here are a few tips that will make packing a breeze.

Pack clothing as is,  place all your items on hangers together and cover with a garbage bag fasten shut with twist ties or knot the bag if you are in a pinch. You can also use your clothing to wrap your breakables; this minimizes the amount of a packing material you need.

Try moving your dresser as is, If the clothing inside is light enough, you may not have to remove the drawers, saving time and energy. You can also remove the drawers with the items still inside. That way the dresser will be lighter, and your drawers will not be falling all over the place *ba dum tss*.

Just make sure:

  • Furniture pieces are not too heavy to carry and lift.
  • There are no fragile items left inside the furniture
  • To prevent items from shifting place – use foam sheets, crumpled newspaper, and other packing supplies to fill empty spaces in furniture
  • Secure doors of dresses, so they do not accidentally open during the transportation
  • Wrap the drawers in plastic wrap to keep their contents safely in place

Pack books in a suitcase. Packing your books in a suitcase will not only allow you to move them quickly, but you will also help you avoid straining your back.

Pack similar items together, this will help you remain organized when unpacking. Also, pack an article that has multiple components in the same box to avoid losing any parts.

Use Ziploc bags to pack smaller items, organizing smaller pieces can take a lot of time. To avoid wasting time pack all your smaller items in ziploc bags. This will not only save you time, but will prevent you from losing them.

Label your boxes, indicate where the box is going, as well as a brief inventory of what is inside the box. Make sure to label “this side up,” and “handle with care” with a permanent marker.

Ask for help

Whether it is getting rid of items that hold sentimental value or clearing out that closet of yours. Many hands make light work. This is why calling some friends up or hiring professional packers can make all the difference when packing.

If you decide to ask for help, make sure to know exactly what you want from them. Consult your checklist to make sure that everything runs smoothly.

We hope that these tips and tricks have made made your last minute packing less stressful!
