DMV Change of Address, Massachusetts, United States

How to notify the Massachusetts DMV of an address change?

Are you planning to move to, from, or within Massachusetts? Like all other states, you are required to update your address with the government. So, whether you are a new resident or moving around the block, you must settle your affairs with the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) as soon as possible.

Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is a state-level agency that keeps a record of all the motorists and their vehicles in the state. If you don’t want to miss important registration renewal notices and parking tickets, updating your address with RMV should be at the top of your moving to-do list.

Massachusetts RMV wants you to notify them of the address change within 30 days of your move. If you fail to do so, you will not be allowed to drive around in the beautiful streets of Massachusetts.

Furthermore, it’s not just about changing your address on the driver’s license; your vehicle registration(s) should also be updated within 30 days.

Following are the cases when you need to worry about the address change:

  • I’m moving within Massachusetts
  • I’m moving from another State to Massachusetts
  • I’m moving from Massachusetts to another State

Here’s how to notify the Massachusetts RMV of an address change.

Updating your Address with Massachusetts DMV

I’m moving within Massachusetts: How to change my address with the Massachusetts RMV?

Massachusetts spans over 27,000 square kilometers. Chances are you will move around in the state once or twice in your life. And yes, you still have to deal with the mighty RMV. Filling out an official U.S. Postal Service Change of Address Form will NOT update your address with Massachusetts RMV.

And changing your address and updating your documents is really not that difficult. You can do it in the following ways:

  • Online
  • In-Person
  • By Phone

The state of Massachusetts will not issue a new driver’s license in this case. You can write the new residential address using permanent ink on the back of the driver’s license in the area provided, OR You can apply for a new driver’s license for $25.

For vehicle registrations, you have to update the address for each vehicle. You should also notify your insurance agent or company of your address change. It seems a lot, but once we get into the details, you’ll see how easy it is to update your address in Massachusetts.

And remember, you only have 30 days for both driver’s license and vehicle registration change of address.  Get “moving” and update your address as soon as possible.

Update my Address Online with the RMV

The most convenient and fastest way to update your address is through the online MyRMV portal. It will only take 5-10 minutes of your time and save you a visit to the local RMV office.
